What is Kung Fu?
Kung Fu means "skill and effort" and can describe anything that one needs to spend time training in and becoming skillful in. When it means "martial art," Kung Fu refers to the hundreds of styles of martial arts in China, all of which are different. However, there is one thing that all Chinese martial arts have in common and that is the idea that Kung Fu itself is merely skill.
The real value of Chinese martial arts goes beyond self defense. It lies within the strong traditional training that all Kung Fu styles emphasize: training that will lead to personal enlightenment. The three concepts of our system (San Tao) The mind, body and spirit are treated as equally important. The mind for developing wisdom and guidance, the body for quality of life and the spirit for enlightenment and healthy living, Kung Fu teaches the student to respect the teacher and the teacher's advice; to be respectful towards others, to appreciate and protect the environment and to only use Kung Fu in a morally correct manner.
When you begin at Warfield's it is known as Koy Moon (entering the gates)and it refers to the student understanding they are about to develop new ideas for physical and mental well-being. The student will learn a unique blend of philosophy for the mind, Zong He Pa Kua Chang Kung Fu for the complete strengthening of the body and superior theory of self-defense and these concepts are then combined with the nine cornerstones of thinking known as Jiu Jing Mien. (Nine Golden Gates) When these three concepts are combined in allows and helps to guide the student towards finding their own unique spirit and true purpose in life. It is important to know these lessons are taught in a non-religious way-meaning that all ideas of the individual student's creator are respected and never challenged. Master Warfield is a Christian yet he believes in the right of all people to chose their own belief.
If a student has time restraints and wishes to study the martial arts training only, their training begins with the Pa Kua Chang (8 trigram palm) style. Pa Kua Chang has its roots in the internal martial arts systems of China and was created by Tung Hai Chuan around 1860. Pa Kua Chang is famous for its lightning fast footwork, combined with circular movements and a variety of powerful close combat hand techniques. Beginning with the fundamental techniques and forms, practitioners will develop strength flexibility and an understanding of its traditional applications. This program is based on the methods used to train professional martial artists in China today.
Kung Fu consists of a number of martially inspired systems for fighting, health development, and dance. As for the hundreds of different styles, some are hard and linear, using punches and kicks. Other styles are soft and circular using the attackers own force against them for combat. Some schools resemble Karate. Weapons are used in our school. Grappling methods are generally not used in most kung fu systems but have a very important roll in our system.
